Our Sustainability Strategy

The past year has presented both challenges and opportunities to simplify and reaffirm our perennial commitment to sustainability. This report reflects our position as an industry leader in sustainability and introduces our expanded program with additional five and ten-year goals across our new and existing sustainability pillars. It also provides an open and honest account to consumers and other stakeholders who want to know more about where their food is made and how it is produced.

We look ahead with anticipation toward Smithfield’s robust, bright future. We know that when faced with challenges, our employees create the solutions. Together, we will guide our business to excellence.

Our Top Performance Indicators

In 2020, we completed work on our most recent set of five-year goals and report our progress against them in our Sustainability Impact Report.
GHG Reduction

We're broadening our industry-leading greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction commitment to 30% by 2030 across our entire U.S. value chain.

Renewable Electricity

We have a new goal to obtain 50% of our electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, by 2030.

Reduction in Sodium and Sugar

Our efforts have resulted in a decrease in added sugar and sodium across product lines.

We’ve refreshed our sustainability platform for the next 10 years and have goals and targets to address climate change, water, waste, worker safety, diversity needs and all the issues that we’ve identified as critical to our success."
